On the limits of self-improvement

I am typing this morning with a bunch of yellow post-its strewn in front of me. Each has a few rough thoughts written on it which are intended to form the skeleton of this essay. I wrote them while I was waiting for the kettle to boil and my coffee to percolate. Once I had these notes written and the coffee consumed, I went for a walk on the outskirts of my seaside village while I allowed some ideas to take shape.
